Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Leashed dogs can hike most trails and walk long stretches of Lake Michigan beach. The Dune Climb and some beaches are off limits, and others close in spring and summer for nesting shorebirds.

Where dogs can go

  • Most hiking trails, on a leash.
  • Esch Road Beach north to the park boundary in Empire, all year.
  • Empire Beach north to the south end of North Bar Lake, all year.
  • Glen Haven Beach east to the park boundary in Glen Arbor, all year.
  • The beach from the park boundary north of Glen Arbor around Pyramid Point to Bohemian Road, all year.
  • The beach from Good Harbor Trail Road to the north park boundary, all year.
  • Leash no longer than 6 feet, at all times.

Off limits for dogs

  • The face of the Dune Climb, all year.
  • North Bar Lake access, all year.
  • The Maritime Museum grounds and its beach access, all year.
  • The beach between Peterson Road and Esch Road, all year.
  • The beach between Bohemian Road and Good Harbor Trail, all year.
  • Sleeping Bear Point Trail and beach access, April 15 to August 15.
  • All beaches south of Esch Road beach, April 15 to August 15.
  • Glen Haven Beach west to the Maritime Museum beach, April 15 to August 15.
  • Ski trails, December 1 to March 31: Platte Plains (Otter, Bass, Lasso loops), Old Indian, Windy Moraine, Shauger Hill, Alligator Hill, Bay View, Good Harbor Bay, Sleeping Bear Heritage, Kettles, and Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive.

Good to know, from the park

  • Hot sand and pavement can burn paw pads in summer, even when the air is not that hot.
  • Bring extra water and a bowl when you are away from your car.
  • Beach rules change during the year to protect nesting piping plovers. Check maps and posted signs.
  • Breaking pet rules can lead to a ticket and fine.
  • The park's seasonal closures (listed as April 15 to August 15) protect nesting piping plovers. Check this year's dates before you go.
