Dogs can play in the main day-use area of the dunes and roam much of the preserve. The deep dunefield and most of the grasslands are off limits.

- The main day-use area of the dunefield
- Great Sand Dunes National Preserve
- Medano Pass Primitive Road and Liberty Road
- Leash no longer than 6 feet, at all times.
Off limits for dogs
- The dunefield beyond the first high ridge
- Off the Dunes Overlook Trail
- North of Point of No Return, including Sand Ramp Trail
- Backpacking campsites inside the national park
- The visitor center and bathrooms
Good to know, from the park
- Summer sand can hit 150°F from late morning to late afternoon. Go early or late, and consider booties.
- Prickly pear cactus grows in the grasslands. Walk slowly; tweezers help.
- Pets can't be left tied to vehicles, trees or anything else.
- Never leave pet food out at your picnic spot or campsite.
