Camp Food for Dogs: What to Pack and How to Store It
How to pack your dog's meals, water and treats for a camping trip, and keep them away from wildlife.

Camp is no place for a surprise menu. The easiest trips start with your dog's usual food, packed by the meal, with plenty of water.
The other half is storage. To wildlife, your dog's dinner smells just like yours.
The checklist
0 of 10 packed
Feeding at camp, made easy
Keep the menu the same
Stick with what your dog eats at home. A new place is enough change for one weekend.
Pack by the meal
Portion each meal into its own bag before you leave. No measuring in the dark.
Pick up the bowl
Feed, then put the bowl and any leftovers away right after. Don't leave food out between meals.
Think light for the trail
On hikes, carry snacks and water. Freeze-dried food is light in a pack if you'll be out past a mealtime.
What we pack
Camp food
Light trail food
AlphaPak Freeze-Dried Raw Dog Food
Why we pick it
Freeze-dried, so it's light in the pack and needs no cooler. It's our sister brand, so weigh our pick with that in mind.
Skip it if
Your dog has never tried it. Switch foods at home a couple of weeks before the trip, not at the trailhead.
Bowls, water and storage
Sealed storage in the car
Gamma2 Vittles Vault Airtight Food Container
Why we pick it
Keeps your dog's food sealed and dry in the car and keeps camp critters out of it. Comes with a scoop.
Skip it if
You need a bear canister. This isn't one, so follow the park's food storage rules.
Bowls, water and storage
Bowl for food and water
Ruffwear Quencher Packable Bowl
Why we pick it
Folds flat, weighs next to nothing, and works for water on the trail and dinner at camp.
Skip it if
You already have a collapsible bowl that doesn't leak. Keep it.
Bowls, water and storage
Water in the pack
AlphaPak Kobuk Water Bladder
Why we pick it
A BPA-free bladder with a locking pour top that rolls flat when empty. Comes in 500ml and 1L and fits in pack saddlebags.
Skip it if
Your dog drinks from your bottle on the trail. One less thing to carry.
Bowls, water and storage
Water on the drive
Stanley IceFlow Water Bottle
Why we pick it
Insulated, so the water you left in the car is still cool when you reach the trailhead.
Skip it if
You're counting ounces on a backpacking trip. It's heavy for that.
Stay safe out there
- Pet food is bear food, says Yosemite. Store it the same way you store your own food.
- Never leave pet food out at your picnic site or campsite. It can draw wild animals.
- If your dog eats something it shouldn't, call ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435. A consultation fee may apply.
When in doubt, call your vet.
