Two dachshunds wearing small dog packs in the grass

A dog pack turns your dog into a real hiking partner. They carry their own water, bowl and snacks, and a lot of dogs walk taller with a job to do.

The right pack fits snug, rides evenly on both sides, and doesn't rub. Here's how to pick one, and the ones we'd reach for.

How to pick and start a pack

Size by girth

Measure around the widest part of your dog's rib cage, then use the brand's size chart. Dog packs fit like a harness, not like a coat.

Start empty

Let your dog wear the empty pack on a few short walks first. Add a little weight at a time once they're comfortable.

Keep it even

Load both sides with about the same weight, heavy items low and close. A lopsided pack slides and rubs.

Decide: removable bags or not

Bags that come off let your dog rest without the load. Sewn-on bags have fewer parts to lose.

Outward Hound DayPak Dog Backpack

$$$

Why we pick it

A light saddlebag pack with two pockets on each side, so the weight stays even. A low-cost way to find out if your dog likes carrying a pack.

Stay safe out there

  • Ruffwear recommends your dog carry no more than 25% of their body weight, including the pack, and starting with a light load.
  • Puppies, older dogs and dogs with joint problems may not be ready to carry weight. Ask your vet before you load them up.
  • Never leave your dog unattended at camp, and never in a hot vehicle.

When in doubt, call your vet.
